This is a dive in the Dominican Republic at Bayahibe in the cave of "El Chicho", 400 meters penetration and you have a big air pocket and then you can continue 400 more meters. The cave looks like a digestive tube with some very nice formations inside. It has been filmed with a GOPRO Camera, unfortunately the light system is not adapted for VDO, but still very nice enjoy :-)

This is a Ocean Cave dive at the Sandwich Cave in Abu Helal. The name of the cave comes from the very tight restriction at the beginning of the dive and the ending of the cave that takes you like a sandwich :-). It's at 40 Meters depth and you can make around 20 minutes bottom time. The best way to dive it is on Sidemount configuration and to leave the deco cylinders at the beginning of the Cave.

On May 9^th and 10^th, PADI EMEA conducted the second orientation program for specifically selected Instructor Trainers who are joining the TecRec system. Ten candidates from across EMEA’s territory attended the program in Bristol, UK, which was led by Mark Caney (VP Rebreather Technologies, Technical Diving Division). The group represented a wealth of technical diving experience and knowledge in all areas including EANx, Trimix, rebreather, sidemount, cave and wreck . This experience lent itself to an interesting and enjoyable program with opportunities for the group to provide valuable feedback, whilst being oriented and trained in the TecRec Instructor Training process. These Instructor Trainers will now be able to offer TecRec Instructor Training to PADI members, and continue to swell the ranks of TecRec Instructors throughout EMEA territory.

Sidemount diving at DDT

Sidemount configuration is scuba diving that has cylinders mounted alongside the diver, below the shoulders and along the hips, instead of the classical backmounted system.
Sidemount diving started in England, where it was used in partially submerged caves, it was an easier method to transport diving gear between totally submerged sections of the caves. In the mid seventies the Americans started using the same configuration for Cave diving. Bill Rennaker was the Sidemount pioneer, today Sidemount diving is available for recreational diving and technical diving.
Here at DDT we offer you the possibility to follow 2 types of Sidemount courses:

- Recreational Sidemount up to 40 meters with the Razor Harness of Steve Bogaerts.

- Technical Sidemount with Hollis SMS 100 system. (Single and dual bladder)

Tom Steiner has developed the first course outline for the “Technical Sidemount Speciality” that is exclusively aimed for the Technical Diver. This PROTEC course will teach you how to safely use Sidemount System on deep dives up to 100 meters. It’s a tough and challenging course where you will learn lots of new techniques.

A new wreck in Dahab near Islands

Here are some pictures of the new wreck that we dove yesterday. The Sailing boat sank on the 13th of July 2010 and the boat is 13 meters long. Its lying at 18 meters depth and it was a Swiss boat coming from Israel....
So now Dahab has a wreck that can be dived by everyone :-)

OLED color display
The 2.4” (6.1 cm) display with a 320 x 240 pixel resolution and 65,000 colors in OLED technology offers the best possible display clarity and sharpness combined with the widest possible viewing angle.

The display brightness is automatically regulated via an integrated light sensor. Three additional LEDs show status information or warning signals. Warning signals are also transmitted acoustically. The display provides menu-supported, intuitive user operation.

Casing and power supply

The Dr5’s casing is milled from a single block of anodized aluminum, eliminating potential failure points such a screws and making the Dr5 so durable that it is depth rated to 350-500* meters (36-51 ATA). The deep black design with three high-quality, red, piezo-electric buttons ensures complete ease of operation even at great depths or with especially thick gloves.
The Dr5’s extra powerful battery provides a minimum of 20 hours of operating time and is completely rechargeable in a maximum of six hours. The battery can be recharged via a USB cable or the included power adapter connected to your PC. The battery is user replaceable in the field thanks to the coin-slot cover and we do of course offer replacement batteries.
The Dr5 can be attached either
with the wristband provided or with bungees, the Dr5 is the first “bungee-ready” dive computer!

The best connections
Three oxygen sensors can be connected to the Dr5 dive computer via the 7-pin Fischer jack, so that the Dr5 is compatible with both open (OC) and closed circuit (CCR) scuba systems. It supports breathing mixtures of air, Nitrox, Trimix and Heliox; up to ten gases can be configured simultaneously.
A built in bi-directional wireless interface will serve to display tank pressure and/or allow a wireless connection to O2 sensors in the future. The Dr5 can be connected to computers running Windows, Linux or Mac OSx with its USB interface utilizing standard drivers (no dedicated driver software is necessary).
Software and open interface
Thanks to open programming interfaces, the Dr5 can be easily upgraded utilizing either Heinrichs Weikamp firmware or third-party software. The Dr5 supports dive planning on your PC before uploading dive plans onto the Dr5. Dr5 is the first dive computer designed for initial dive logging in open UDDF, and it also allows for logging using DivingLog and JDiveLog.
Powerful computing platform
With its 32Bit AVR UC3 processor and 256 MB RAM, as well as a 2 GB flash memory, the Dr5 is prepared for all current and future diving applications with it’s enormous computing resources.

The Abu Helal cave canyon system!

From Point A to nearly "E" the canyon can be dived. But just before point "E" the cave becomes to narrow to pass through so you need to return to point "D" to exit.
From point "E" to "F" its a closed Canyon with light inside, its absolutely fantastic this part, the Canyon has a 45 degree inclination there!
This is the primary mapping of the Abu Helal cave system that we started exploring since 5 days with Sebastien Kister, Mercy Hehuat and Damiano Flisi. There is a entrance at 27 meters depth, its a small entrance where you enter vertically, the cave system is also very narrow, around 2 meters wide! and is extending on probably 1 km length until it opens again and becomes a Canyon. Inside the cave you have a thermocline at 36 meters, the average depth of the explored part of the cave system is between 35-41 meters. Once inside there is no way to come out except at the sections pointed with an exit (B,C,D). Some parts are completely dark for quite a while so you need to have a good lamp with 2 back-up lights, coming back from where you entered will not be as nice as if you do it in a one way direction, there is a lot of silt and the visibility will be reduced to a maximum of 1 meter. This is not a dive to be done on single tank! its a serious and dangerous penetration and you need to do that on trimix in order to have a clear head, if you dont know the place you better lay a line inside the cave or ask us for advice. The right training is also needed for this type of dives!

The Abu Helal Cave system map!

This is the primary mapping of the Abu Helal cave system that we started exploring since 5 days with Sebastien Kister, Mercy Hehuat and Damiano Flisi. There is a entrance at 27 meters depth, its a small entrance where you enter vertically, the cave system is also very narrow, around 2 meters wide! and is extending on probably 1 km length until it opens again and becomes a Canyon. This is our latest exploration dive here in Dahab, we found north of Dahab a Canyon that is parallel to the shore, it's average depth is between 43 and 65 meters with some incredible drop offs going from 80 to 100 + meters. This Canyon has lots of branches like a tree and at the part where we finished exploring there is a Arch at 65 meters that looks like a "Stargate", at this point the Canyon splits in 2 directions (something else to explore). UEMIS Zuerich test dive at the Blue Hole of Dahab!

Finally we had the chance to try on a Technical dive the new UEMIS Zuerich Dive computer made in Switzerland, a nice dive computer, full of new technology, excellent reading, easy manipulation, 3 gas computer for the moment (air and 2 deco mixes) the trimix version will be available next year according to the company. Deep stops are calculated with a 65% GVE (Gas Volune Expansion), the color OLED makes it a really nice and very easy to read, nice finishing and you can even charge your computer with the integrated solar cell, finally a computer with some evolution :-). The lucky ones that could test it...from left to right (Sebastian Lier, Tom and Didier)

This is a 200 meter dive with Pascal Bernabe organized by Fantaseatec in Dahab.
71 Deco Tanks, 8 safety divers between 40 and the surface, 2 deep safety divers, a 217 meter long rope, 1 twin-set 18 liters, 2 twin-sets 20 liters, 10 twin-sets 12 liters, bottom gas 6/75, 1 doctor, 4 surface support, 8 double cabin pick-up cars, total run time 5 hours, 220'000 liters of gas, cost of the dive is 6.66 euro per meter down and up, 9 hours blending....
Interesting facts:
You would be able to stay at 30 meters with the total amount of gas for 46 hours...
The average cost of the 200 meter dive is cheaper then 46 recreational dives!
Ok it's only one dive but still :-)

- 210 meters, mission accomplished, thanks very much to all the support divers that handled this dive so professionally, thanks to the surface support and to Dr. Ahmed, to the drivers that worked all very hard, thanks to the boat that helped us picking up the stucked line :-) at the bottom, 71 deco tanks in total for the dive, run time 5 hours... Great Day :-)
This has been the deepest dive ever reached at the Blue Hole so far!

A 200 meter dive at the Blue Hole in Dahab!

Here are some nice pictures from a 200 meter dive at the Blue Hole, a Manta even crossed at 130 meters, the divers where Pascal Bernabe, Jean-Marc Morere and Jean-Louis Criscuoloso its a French trio,congratulations to all 3 for the impressive dive (total run time 5 hours). The deep support was done by Ismail and Tom Steiner, second shift at 30 meters support was Sebastien Kister, Volkert Spahr, Laura, Adam and Didier (Total run time for each support diver was 4 hours). Thanks also to all the people that have been helping on the surface and that made all this possible, especially the one who brought the rope with the weights up at the end of the dive LOL :-).......Thanks to all of you I really did appreciate your precious help!

A new Canyon in Dahab " the 3 Valley Canyon"

Those are the pictures of the new Canyon discovered and explored on the 28th of March 2009 at Rick's Reef . Mohamed Fahmy, Samah Sokar and myself explored today the full length of the Canyon. Enter Rick's reef, take a 90 degrees on your compass North North east, follow slowly the slope down until you find 3 Coral pillars at 32 meters (8 minutes to reach them), look at you right and that's where the Valley starts, total bottom time is 22 minutes and you will reach the end of the Canyon at minute 21, depth is between 38 meters and 46 meters, at half way you have Maria's Mountain that is going to 53 meters depth and well there is something behind that....but that's for another exploration dive :-)
